Have you checked your cholesterol level?

Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance that is found in the body. The amount of cholesterol found in the body often depending on the types of food we eat, our life style and culture.

Cholesterol travels through our bloodstreams in small packets called lipoprotein, which contains lipids and proteins. There are two major types of cholesterol:

1. LOW-DENSITY LIPO-PROTEINS (LDL)
LDL, sometimes referred to as the “bad” cholesterol is a major type of lipoproteins that transport cholesterol, through our bloodstream. This is termed “bad” because at a high level it often cause a buildup of cholesterol in the arteries.

2. HIGH-DENSITY LIPO-PROTEINS (HDL)
HDL is considered “good” cholesterol, transports cholesterol from other parts of the body back to the liver which removes the cholesterol.

Maintaining your cholesterol level is extremely important because high levels of LDL circulating in the blood and low levels of HDL can cause buildup of cholesterol in the artery walls. Overtime, artery walls can become narrowed and clogged; this could lead to heart disease or stroke.
